Our Law Society accredited mental health solicitors advise clients who are liable to be detained under the Mental Health Act 1983. We represent clients at First-tier Tribunal hearings, in the Upper Tribunal, the Court of Appeal, the Administrative Court, the County Court and at Hospital Managers’ hearings.

We hold a contract with the Legal Aid Agency to provide legal services of England. In certain circumstances we can offer advice, assistance and legal representation to clients outside of these areas.

Our solicitors have expertise in all areas of mental health law, including:

  • civil and forensic sections of the Mental Health Act 1983;
  • representing nearest relatives in displacement proceedings;
  • appealing decisions of the First-tier Tribunal (Mental Health);
  • mental disorders affecting older people;
  • mental disorders affecting adolescents;
  • section 117 discharge care planning;
  • human rights issues; and
  • judicial review

Most mental health work is undertaken on a public funding (Legal Aid) basis subject to eligibility. Representation before the First-tier Tribunal (Mental Health), however, is non-means tested and no payment for our services is required from the client.
